Frequently Asked Questions

Just ask us, otherwise you'll never know....

If you have any questions not answered here, please do not hesitate to get in touch. No question is silly!

Q: I'm not flexible - can I do yoga?
A: Yes! In fact you are a perfect candidate for yoga. Many people think that they need to be flexible to begin yoga, but that’s a little bit like thinking that you are too dirty to take a shower, or you need to be able to play soccer before getting soccer classes. Come as you are and you will find that yoga practice will help you become more flexible. This newfound agility will be balanced by strength, coordination as well as a sense of physical confidence and overall well-being.

Q: I'm not fit - can I do yoga?
A: Yes, absolutely. There is no assumed level of fitness required for the yoga classes and workshops we teach. You could be a couch potato or an athlete, yoga can benefit everyone. Yoga can help you gain a sense of physical confidence and overall well-being.

Q: What should I bring to class?
A: Just bring yourself, in appropriate clothing (see below), and maybe bring a small bottle of water. And sometimes, we tell you what you need to bring depending on the class or the workshop. Please be sure to read all the descriptions and welcome emails that we sent to you.

Q: What should I wear?
A: Some people wear baggy, loose fitting bottoms or shorts and a t shirt. Other people wear tight, stretchy leggings + tops. The only thing that matters is that you wear comfortable clothes that you can easily move and stretch in. It's good to have clothes that keep you cool when you are active in yoga, but to bring a jumper for relaxation, when the body rapidly cools down. Some people also bring socks and a jumper  (maybe even a small blanket) for the relaxation.

Q: Do I need a yoga mat?
A: All the equipment, including mats, you need for class is provided - but we have a very limited amount of them available in the studio. If you want to borrow them for a class, please make a reservation to our business whatsapp at least 6 hours in advance. All the yoga mats are available for rent, €1 per mat.  If you prefer to bring your own yoga mat that's fine too. If you want to also practice at home then having your own mat is a great idea, they are available from lots of places and I also have ones you can buy like the ones we use in class.

Q: When should I eat before a class?
A: When it comes to food and digestion, each individual is different and needs to find out what works for them. In general we do not recommend eating a large meal within 3 hours of a class - if you must eat within 3 hours of a class then a light meal or snack that it easily digested is best. Our digestive system needs 3 hours to digest our food. It's recommended to be hydrated before a class so drink some water.

Q: What if I am late for a class?
A: Ideally, please arrive a few minutes before  the class starts. But things happen, and sometimes people are late, we totally understand. If you can let us know beforehand so that we don't lock the door.

Q: How do I pay for classes?
A: To pay for classes you can use iDEAL, direct transfer, cash or please contact us.

Q: Can I drop in to class?
A: If there is space in a class you may be able to drop in, but you would need to check beforehand to see if these is space. You can phone or email to check.

Q: What type of yoga do you teach?
A: We teach so many different types of Yoga at Mahé studio such as Vinyasa, Restorative, Yin, Meditation, Aerial Yoga (Fly High Yoga), Slow Flow, Gentle Flow, Mindful Movements, Yoga Nidra, and Satsang (Yoga Philosophy).

Q: How is yoga different from stretching, or other kinds of fitness?
A: Unlike stretching or other fitness training, yoga is more than just physically working your body. Within the physical practice of yoga we connect the movement of the body to the rhythm of our breath, which helps to focus and relax the mind by directing our attention inward. Yoga can improve your bodies strength, flexibilty and balance, whilst also calming your mind and improving your posture and how you breath.

Q: What is yoga?
A: Yoga focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to enhance both physical and mental wellbeing. It originated in India many hundreds of years ago, and has continually evolved towards the form that is popular throughout the world today. There are many different styles of yoga practices today.

Q: Does Mahé turn the heaters on?

A: Yes, Mahé does. Mahé turns the heaters on when it's 10 degrees and lower. As much as we'd love to have Bali temperature at Mahé at all times, we need to be conscious of the gas price. The heaters at Mahé can get very very hot when they're all turned on. It is very important to sit nearest the heaters if you are feeling cold easily, and please sit further away from the heaters if you tend to feel naturally warmer.

Q: What should I wear to class?

A: Layers, layers, layers. Thick socks are a great investment, you can also wear one of those big, thick and fully poncho to class (see: oodie).

Q: I'm worried that I will feel cold anyways. What should I do if I'm still freezing despite all the hot heaters in class?

A: Please do let us know if you're still feeling cold. We don't want you to be sick. We would love to make you feel comfortable, warm and cozy. We have many hot water bottles, blankets, fresh socks and hot teas to help you feel warm and cozy, and hopefully you'll get warmed up very very soon.

PS: All these informations regarding temperature and warmth at Mahé) are relevant when you are attending passive classes. In fun and active classes such as Fly High Yoga, Gentle Flow, Morning Flow, and Vinyasa, you will get very very warm from the inside. Keep layering up though, it's better that way and of course, you're welcomed to bury yourself under the blankets during savasana.
